I was meant to write something about the weather when Melbourne was going through THAT horrible four days of above-40 degrees. I did write something but decided not to publish it because writing or talking about the weather is tantamount to running out of topics in a small talk scenario. However, since this week is going to be another brutal week of hot days and uncomfortable nights, Melbourne’s weather deserves a mention…but not in the way you think.

Concrete Melbourne has been kind enough to publish lists of great things here in Melbourne. This week, they released the 10 best ice creameria! Who doesn’t like ice cream on a sweltering day? Nothing cools one down better than having a sweet, creamy, velvety concoction smothering a panting, dehydrated tongue. Even lactose-intolerant people will search for their soy ice cream and lucky for them, the queue won’t be long and they are sure to not run out of inventory…ever.

So here it is: The 10 Best Ice Cream Joints in Melbourne courtesy of the Concrete Melbourne research team. What an awesome job would this be right now!

I have to admit, I haven’t been to 8 out of the 10 on the list which says more about how the heat can suck all the energy out of a semi-healthy and active person. I am dying to try N2 Extreme Gelato and Gelato Messina but I am put off by the line snaking out from the front. You’d think that by going there early there will be a tolerable crowd clammering for gelato. But since both are in the motherland of Hispterland, a.k.a., Fitzroy, the hip helado hoard are already there even before you think about wanting to go there. Naturally, I do not blame them. These to Sydney imports have been stockpiling on the wonderful reviews by the patrons.

I was surprised to not see Gelobar which is a Melbourne institution of over 20 years. They have their own following and quite well-known. Gelobar has queues that wraps around the building especially on a hot day.  They renovated recently and banished those 70s dark wooden wall panels and replaced it with larger glass windows and neon.  I hope this doesn’t mean they will suffer the same fate as the Stokehouse months after their refurbishment.
