It’s lucky that we in Melbourne are blessed with good weather. Even if this comes in 10 minute increments throughout the day. It only takes 10 minutes of direct sunshine to get your daily requirement of Vitamin D. I believe this weather is perfect for all of us who have a short attention span. It’s a Gen Y thing… also a Gen X with ADHD, ADD or anything that makes us have a goldfish memory. So with the abundance of good weather, we really have to make the most of outdoor events. One that has been ongoing since I have moved to Melbourne is the Moonlight Cinema. Every night during the course of its run, you take your chances with what Mother Nature dishes out. The constant and less variable things are: you know what is showing ahead of time, and you know who you will be with. Of course, this is under the assumption that you are going with your mates and not be some creepy person who goes alone similar to those who goes to Bondi Beach alone trying to pick up. Yes, I have watched Bondi Rescue. Also, going alone doesn’t mean you’re creepy.
I will have to recommend August: Osage County. It’s showing on Saturday, 28th December. I have to be honest, I’ve only seen the play but not this movie. However, the story is quite fascinating and I will have to make a very intelligent assumption that they will not change the storyline. Family issues that had to be dealt with after a death in the family brought them all back to some rural town in Oklahoma. I remember that the play, staged at the Arts Centre, featured a three-level stage showing the inside of the house. Despite my memory not being so sharp as it was 30 years ago to remember the details of the story is, I do remember being blown away by it and couldn’t stop discussing the issues that were presented.
One other good thing is that you can bring your own picnic baskets stuffed with cheeses, burgers, yumcha dumplings, cerveza and vino if you like. I’d probably stay away from packing a whole roast chicken or whole deep fried fish. With an $18 entry fee, it is cheaper overall to watch movies lying on the grass and not having to purchase overpriced ice cream, soft drinks and popcorn from the candy stand. Oh and don’t forget to bring bug spray. Last and only time I went, it was a really good summer’s night. I provided the mosquitos a buffet they will never forget.
Moonlight Cinema Melbourne starts tonight, Friday, 6th December 2013 until Sunday, 30th March 2014. For the complete schedule, click here.
