A few weeks ago, I featured a shoebox  an apartment in Darlinghurst, Sydney that made most of every square inch of the floor plan. This time, we should go to the other end of the spectrum.

This is a two-level apartment in the Freshwater Place in Southbank, Melbourne. It’s ornate, ostentatious and if your friends haven’t received the memo, this apartment will shout at them that you have arrived.  It is fit for a exiled king and/or queen or an deposed dictator. Because there are only two bedrooms in this opulent apartment, the trusted help will have to find a flat elsewhere in this building. If I am not mistaken, this is the one of the first luxury apartment buildings constructed in this area and all the apartments then had a great views. There is an abundance of space which is hard to come by with newer built apartments in the city.  This is where you can have two or more cats to swing around. Not that I am suggesting this activity but you can, if your sick mind is that way inclined.

This apartment is not subtle and boldly defies the concept of minimalism.  The ornate furnishing and trimmings come with the property so the lucky person only needs to bring suitcases or, in this case, leather trunks, of clothing, cash and precious stones.

Clearly, this is not for everyone. At a price tag of $1,300 per week, there will be a limited amount of people who can afford to pay this. Most likely, a corporation who would like their executive to feel loved and pampered as long as his ROI is worth the money. Also, as we know, people do come with baggage in form of furniture, appliances, etc. The older one gets, the more crap one accumulates. Well, most people do, anyway. So having personal items sitting in storage to live here might be an annoying expense. The decor is also something that would not appeal to a vast majority. Some of would love it and some will absolutely hate it.

However, this apartment is a prudent choice for the right person or company. Not only is the location of this apartment brilliant, the amenities that come in this building is fabulous. There are two pools, two well equipped gyms, a steam room, a bar, a function room and a theater that you can book for private parties. Some of these amenities are up  the 10th floor and some are on the 42nd floor (or somewhere up there). The building also comes with a 24-hour concierge service. They receive packages that require signatures and can let tradies in to do their work in the apartments.  This is convenience with a capital C.

When people move, the expense of getting movers to pack, move and unpack can become exorbitant. Having the furniture already part of the rent means that one can do away with the hassle of arranging the time and paying for these services. For a company, offering this apartment for an overseas or interstate executive means that there will not be moving costs involved. And for the expatriate? Well, most  of them will eventually move back to where they were hired from to settle. Knowing that their personal belongings can be retrieved quicker and more conveniently will always be an appeal. $1,300 per week for all these doesn’t seem so expensive after all.
